About Sunset Board

Neighborhood bulletin boards are full of gigs, classes, kids’ programs and causes, but you only see them if you walk past. Sunset Board collects them in one place.

How it works

Someone photographs a board and sends in the photos. Each flier is cropped out and its text is transcribed in full. Details such as the venue address and ticket links are looked up and cited. An editor checks every flier before it’s published. Past events move to the archive automatically.

The transcription is the main record and the photo is there for reference. Fliers can contain mistakes, and so can transcriptions, so check with the organizer before you go.

What it covers

The Sunset: Golden Gate Park south to the Zoo, Stonestown and Lake Merced, including the Inner Sunset, Outer Sunset, Parkside and Lakeshore. Events elsewhere in the city can appear if their flier was posted on a Sunset board.

Elections & civic fliers

Campaign and ballot-measure fliers are posted as they appear, with their own wording and “paid for by” disclosures. Every side gets the same treatment. Sunset Board doesn’t endorse anyone or summarize campaign claims.

Privacy

Only the flier itself is published. Never the original photo, the people in it or its location data. Contact details on personal notices (babysitting, roommates, lost pets) are left off.

Report a problem or ask for removal

If something is wrong, out of date, or yours and you’d like it taken down, tell us and it will be fixed or removed within 48 hours. Contact the editor and include the page’s link.

Send fliers

Anyone can send photos on the Add fliers page. No account is needed. Take the photo in good light, with four to six fliers in it, and add close-ups of anything with small print. Before anything appears here, a person checks it.

Photos are used only to read the fliers. They’re removed from the inbox once the fliers are read, and only the fliers themselves are published, not your photo, your name or your location. Please keep people out of the shot.

On a phone, add Sunset Board to your home screen. In Safari, tap Share (on newer iPhones it’s inside the ••• menu), then Add to Home Screen. In Chrome, choose Install app. Next time you pass a board, it’s one tap away.

Tides and weather

The weather line at the top of each page, and the tide line at the bottom of the front page, come from the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Ocean Beach tide station. Your browser asks them directly, so they see your IP address, the same as visiting their sites. Sunrise and sunset are worked out on your device.

The fog drifting behind the pages follows the Ocean Beach forecast: thicker when it’s foggy out there, thinner when it’s clear. If it’s not for you, turn it off with the link at the bottom of any page.

Use the calendar

The calendar shows everything with a date. To get new events on your phone automatically, subscribe to the calendar feed, or subscribe to a single section from the bottom of its page.
